Helga Achleitner: Johann Peter Schwanthaler der Ältere 1720 – 1795, Ried 1991, cf. ill. 142, 183 and 193. The sculptor Johann Peter Schwanthaler the Elder (1720 - 1795 Ried im Innkreis) is considered the main master of the Rococo in the Innviertel. As the son of Johann Franz Schwanthaler, he took over his father’s workshop in 1759. His works include the altars in Hohenzell and Tumeltsham, the tabernacle and cross altar in Aspach, the Pietà, the tabernacle and carving group in the parish church in Ried im Innkreis as well as numerous devotional images, especially small formats (e.g. crucifixes and crucifixion groups).
