Another version of the present painting, signed with a monogram and dated 1626, is in the collection of the Mauritshuis, The Hague. The young Messapian shepherds boorishly challenged local nymphs to a dancing contest. Once defeated, the youth were changed into trees, standing next to the Temple of the Nymphs.
