Hugo Hodiener (Hodina) began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He then went to Munich, where he continued to study. Ludwig von Löfftz and Martin von Feuerstein where his teachers in Munich. From 1908 on he undertook study trips through the upper Inn valley and Pitztal valley to Italy. He was wounded during World War I, he became war painter in the press service of the Imperial-Royal war ministry and got in Russian Kriegsgefangenschaft. He preferredly painted landscapes in and of the high mountains.
