Marco Marchetti da Faenza
(1528-1588) attributed to, Cartouche of a crest framed by four putti, pen and brown ink, over black chalk, brown wash, on laid paper, 18 x 14,8 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
The present design for a wall decoration points to the late phase of Mannerism. The gredsque head and the framing features are reminsicent of a language which was developed in the 1520s; the winged putti and the natural movements belong to a Baroque vocabuary. The empty escutcheon is mounted by the hat of a cardinal on top and by a monstrance at the lower end.
