The present drawing is connected with the series of etchings “Figurine”, which Salvator Rosa executed between 1653–1658. The figure of the beggar kneeling in front of a rock is an identical repetition of Salvator Rosa’s etching (c. 1656–57, 14,5 x 9,5 cm), comp. The Illustrated Bartsch, No. 288.69; Richard W. Wallace, The etchings of Salvator Rosa, Princeton University Press 1979, No. 68. II. The preliminary study by Salvator Rosa for the etching is published in: Michael Mahoney, The Drawings of Salvator Rosa, New York 1977, fig. 45.25A.
