In 1830 Rudolf von Alt made his first trip to Gastein. The artist refined his watercolor technique and created works of varying degrees of execution and pictorial character. The contrast between light and dark tones is particularly striking;
his colors are clearly nuanced and reduced. The preliminary drawing in pencil often remains visible in large sections. Von Alt created watercolors such as “The Gorge near Gastein“ (Die Klamm bei Gastein), „The Falls near Gastein“ (Der Schleierfall bei Gastein) and the „View of Gastein with the Gamskarkogel“ (Ansicht von Gastein mit Gamskarkogel).
