Giovanni Grubas

Giovanni Grubas - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Venice 1830–1919 Pula)
Venice, the Grand Canal with Santa Maria della Salute and Punta della Dogana in the Distance, signed -Gio Grubas-, oil on canvas, 61 x 106 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Italy

This painting depicts a view of the Ponte dell’ Accademia, which opened on 20 November 1854. It seems that Grubas painted approximately from the centre of the bridge. It shows the Grand Canal looking towards the Church of the Salute, one of the great landmarks of Venice, and the Punta della Dogana next to it. The first building on the left is Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti, an impressive neo-Gothic building at the foot of the bridge. Behind it are the Palazzi Barbaro and Benzon Foscolo.

Giovanni Grubas became one of the leading view painters in Venice in the second half of the 19th century. Like his forerunners Canaletto (1697-1768) and Francesco Guardi (1712-1793), Grubas was meticulous in the rendering of architecture and the present lot typifies this approach. Grubas’ lively compositions, usually depicting the daily life of the city, carried obvious appeal for the Grand Tours Tourists who visited Venice.
