Hermann David Salomon Corrodi

Hermann David Salomon Corrodi - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(Frascati 1844–1905 Rome)
Egypt, on the Banks of the Nile, signed H. Corrodi. Roma, oil on canvas, 65 x 124 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.

Herman Corrodi was the son of the Swiss-born painter Salomon Corrodi (1810-1892) and the brother of Arnold Corrodi. Herman studied under his father at the Fine Art Academy of San Luca in Rome. Primarily an academic landscape painter, he became famous as an Orientalist painter. He was fascinated with the Orient and travelled widely across North Africa and the Middle East, visiting Syria, Cyprus, Constantinople and Egypt. His travels inspired the present work, which depicts the daily activities of the local people. Bathed in a beautiful golden evening light, travelling traders are shown dealing with residents along the banks of the Nile. Corrodi composed two versions of the same size and similar subject of On the Banks of the Nile, Egypt, presumably due to high demand from collectors at the height of the public’s fascination with Egypt. One appeared on the international art market in 2020 and the other one is the present lot.
