The subject of this sculpture is Carla Erba (1879-1939), daughter of the wealthy Milanese musician Luigi Erba. She married Duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone in 1900. The couple had multiple children together, including Luchino Visconti, the acclaimed film director.
Paul Troubetzkoy portrayed Carla Erba in a large plaster cast, exhibited at the First Venice Biennale where it was much acclaimed by the critics. The cast has since been lost.
