Fernand Toussaint *

(Brussels 1873–1956 Ixelles)
The Young Connaisseuse, signed Fernand Toussaint, oil on canvas, 60.5 x 51 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, New Jersey, USA;
Rago Auctions, Lambertville, New Jersey, 6 May 2017, lot 4;
Private Collection, Vienna.

Fernand Toussaint achieved success through his idealised depictions of sophisticated young women, very much under the influence of his teacher, the popular painter Alfred Stevens (Brussels 1823-1906 Paris).
Excitement for all things Japan took western artists and scholars by storm in the middle of the 19th century and remained a patent influence in the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements. The European encounter with the arts of Japan gave rise to a whole new range of subject matter and new techniques, breaking away from the old traditional concepts of classical modelling taught at the academies. Painters also introduced Japanese decorative elements and motifs in their work, a reflection of the public’s appetite to possess and show far-Eastern porcelain, textiles and woodprints in their homes.

In the above painting by Toussaint, a fashionable lady is shown absorbed in the examination of Japanese prints, a traditional doll lies beside her and an oriental vase is depicted in the background. The subject proved so popular that the artist revisited it with several variations on the theme throughout his career.
