Edgar Payne was born in 1883 in Missouri. He was largely self-taught and earned critical acclaim in his lifetime for his varied depictions of the infinite landscape of the American West. He became one of the primary plein-air landscape painters of the early 20th century. After marrying fellow artist Elsie Palmer in 1912, the couple subsequently moved to Santa Barbara 1915. In 1917 Payne accepted a significant commission from Santa Fe Railroad as part of an advertising campaign. Some of his most famous works feature the Sierra Nevada, which was a constant source of inspiration for him. He would often venture to the upper lakes of the mountain range on horse-back to paint. In 1918 and for the next four years, Payne and his wife relocated to Laguna Beach, California, where he became the founding president of the Laguna Beach Art Association. After finding success during this period, they spent two years painting in Europe and the Alps provided their favourite setting. For instance, Payne’s depiction of the Great White Peak of Montblanc was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1923. In 1941 he wrote a book titled “Composition of Outdoor Painting”, which explains landscape painting, techniques and colour.
