The present painting exhibits the influence of the Haarlem painter Hendrick Goltzius. The composition is known from an engraving of Goltzius’s published by Jan Saenredam in circa 1595, showing a fool cradling his ‘marotte’ or jester’s staff, conserved in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1854,0513.175).
