We are grateful to Fabrizio Magani for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.
The present painting relates to a composition by Giovanni Antonio Canal, called il Canaletto, which was engraved by Antonio Visentini in the Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum (see ex Antonii Canal Tabulis XXXVIII aere expressi ab Antonio Visentini in partes tres distributi: Venetiis apud Joannem Baptistam Pasquali. MDCCXLII. Pars Prima, Venice 1742, plate IX). Cimaroli enriched his composition with lively figures, some working on the boats and others leaning out of windows.
On the right side of the composition is the Renaissance palace of the Vendramin-Calergi, designed by Mauro Codussi, with its distinctive windows divided by columns. Beyond the Rio di San Marcuola are the palaces of the Memmo, Gritti, Correr and Querini, and the church of San Geremia. The wide-angle effect achieved also permits the inclusion of Palazzo Tron in the foreground, followed by the Palazzo Belloni Battagia, alongside which is the Granaio del Megio and the Fondaco dei Turchi beyond.
