Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - Incisione e multipli

(Albi 1864-1901 Malrose) “Pour toi!”, 1893, lithograph, first state, signed by hand, additionally monogrammed in the plate, coloured with stencil by another hand (as indicated in the catalogue raisonné), no. 73 of 100 numbered impressions, embossed stamp Edition Kleinmann lower left, further embossed stamp lower right, image size 27.5 x 19.7 cm, sheet size 35.2 x 26.5 cm, the sheet slightly browned, mounted, framed, Adriani 28, (EW)

The present item constitutes a variant of the portrait of bassoonist Dihau, from the work “L’Orchestre de l’Opéra” executed by Edgar Degas 25 years earlier, which was displayed in the Dihaus’ apartment on Avenue Frochot. That work was probably the main reason for Lautrec’s frequent visits to his relatives. In 1898, the artist led a party to the Dihaus late at night, in order to serve Degas’ masterpiece (today at the Musée d'Orsay) as a desert. (cf. Götz Adriani, Toulouse-Lautrec. Das gesamte graphische Werk, DuMont, Cologne 1986, p. 61)
