Giovanni Migliara was born in Alessandria where he trained locally before moving to Milan. There he studied at the Brera Academy. He worked under the tutelage of Gaspare Galliari, a master of scenography. He executed for him stage sets for the theater Carcano and for the Scala. In 1810 for health reasons he stopped working as stage designer. He painted mostly miniatures. He exhibited for the first time four cityscapes to the annual exhibition at the Brera Academy in 1812. He exhibited there until he died in 1837. He then specialized in landscape painting with a predilection for capricci and fantastic architecture in a Venetian style. He reinterpreted indeed the Venetian tradition of the 18th Century Vedute. In 1822 he was named Professor at the Brera Accademy and, in 1833 he was named court painter for King Charles Albert of Sardinia. He was the author of “Trattato di geometria descrittiva”, published in 1813.
