Solomon-Léon Sarluis, called Léonard Sarluis

Solomon-Léon Sarluis, called Léonard Sarluis - Dipinti dell’Ottocento

(The Hague 1874–1949 Paris)
Geremia, signed Sarluis, oil on canvas, 65 x 50 cm, framed

This second painting’s relationship to the ‘Mystique de la bible’ cycle can be confirmed by the presence of the fallen Menorah in the lower left-hand corner. There are, in fact, two possible iconographic references. Drawing on the Old Testament, the most direct reference is undoubtedly to the verses of the prophet Jeremiah (8:17) in which serpents emanating from the hieratic figure state: “Behold, I am about to send you poisonous serpents against which there is no spell, and they will bite you”.
A second iconographic source lies in the similarity with another image by Sarluis that appeared as an illustration for Gaston Pavlowsky’s book ‘Voyage au pays de la quatrième dimension’ written in 1912 and published 1923.
