![Joos de Momper - Dipinti antichi II Joos de Momper - Dipinti antichi II](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A221110/normal/joos-de-momper-8282459.jpg)
(Antwerp 1564–1635)
A mountainous landscape with a castle and travellers on a path, a harbour beyond,
oil on panel, 52 x 75 cm, framed
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the authenticity of the present painting upon its inspection in the original. His certificate (August 2022) accompanies the present lot.
The fortress in the middle ground is a feature typically employed by de Momper throughout his career in several of his paintings dating from different decades. It is always situated on a hill overlooking a wide bay, with a harbour guarded by soldiers. De Momper must have familiarised himself with the motif during an early journey to Italy, which scholars rightly assume to have taken place. The tree-covered mountain range with the castle on the right-hand side behind the fortress represents an innovative novelty, as it directs the eye towards the left into the distance, from where the sun bathes the scene in uniform light. The strong colours suggest a date around 1620. The tiny staffage figures, as Ertz points out in his certificate, are by the hand of Hans Jordaens III (Antwerp 1595–1643).
