Lotto No. 164

Antoine Coypel attributed to (1661-1722)

Antoine Coypel attributed to (1661-1722) - Disegni e stampe d'autore fino al 1900

Triumph of Galatea, black and red chalk on laid paper, 19,5 x 26,8 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

The composition of the present drawing is related to Coypel’s painting “Triumph of Galatea”, which was also reproduced in an engraving by Charles Louis Simmoneau (1695) (see: N. Garnier, Antoine Coypel 1661-1722, Paris 1989, Cat. 52, Fig. 86).The Musee du Louvre in Paris preserves the preliminary drawing (Inv. Nr. R. F. 12.340) of the painting. Coypel’s painting of the theme which is one of his earliest mythological depictions is often considered the counterpart of "Bacchus and Ariadne" (Garnier 1989, Cat. 49). The composition and its triangular arrangement is reminiscent of models such as Rapahel and Poussin, whereas the figures remind one of the figure type of Rubens’s paintings in the Galerie de Luxembourg, which were once copied by Coypel (Garnier 1989, Cat. 411-412). The present drawing was perhaps made in preparation for the painting or for a version after it.
