The present painting relates to a composition by the Master of the Magdalen Legend registered in the RKD database under no. 0000114149.
The composition derives from a prototype by Rogier van der Weyden (see D. de Vos, De Madonna-en-Kindtypologie bij Rogier van der Weyden en enkele minder gekende Flemalleske voorlopers, in: Jahrbuch der Berliner Museen, vol. 13, 1971). Several variations of Rogier van der Weyden’s composition were produced by the Master of the Magdalen Legend and his workshop (see M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. XII, 1975).
