Johann Heiss
(Memmingen 1640–1704 Augsburg)
The Abduction of Helen of Troy,
oil on canvas, 125 x 183.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Peter Königfeld for endorsing the attribution.
Apart from Christian subjects and allegories, Greek and Roman mythology is of great importance in the oeuvre of Johann Heiss. A smaller version of the present composition is conserved in the Städtische Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg (see P. Königfeld, Der Maler Johann Heiss, Memmingen 1640–1704 Augsburg, Weißenhorn 2001, p. 278, cat. no. A2). In the present painting, compared to the version in Augsburg, Heiss has extended the coastline to include numerous figures from the entourage of Menelaus and Paris. The subject of the abduction of Helen is taken from Homer’s Odyssey (4,12 ff). When the Trojan prince Paris abducted Helen, the beautiful wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta, and carried her off to the city of Troy, the Greeks responded by mounting an attack on the city, thus beginning the Trojan War.
