In 1774 Füger for the first time executed five sketches that were to serve as illustrations for Salomon Gessler's story "Der Erste Schiffer" (The first skipper). These drawings were executed in red chalk and appear somewhat more pittoresque. In 1796 Füger worked again on this theme, this time, however, more graphically. The Albertina houses a series of seven drawings with illustration sketches for the series. The present drawing is the first draft preceding the elaborate drawing showing the dreaming young man (Albertina Inv. 5255).
