(Milan 1810–1877)
Three Monkeys, signed, dated (scratched) Giuseppe Penuti 1846, oil on canvas, 64.5 x 55 cm, framed

Giuseppe Penuti was an Italian Neoclassical painter who worked in Milan and was best known for his portraits. He studied in Milan at the Brera Academy under Luigi Sabatelli. He exhibited his first works in his home town in 1833. Penuti also devoted himself to history, genre and veduta painting, and created several studies of animals in the last decade of his life.
The present lot shows three monkeys in a forest landscape; the smallest is sleeping, the middle one seems to be watching something and the large one looks directly at the viewer. Few of Penuti’s paintings are available at auction. His works were shown to the public at exhibitions until shortly before his death.
