Lotto No. 524

Giovanni Squarcina

(Zara 1825–1891 Venice)
Mother and Child in Campagna Landscape, oil on canvas, 74.5 x 65 cm, framed

This striking portrait of a mother and child wearing dress typical of the Lazio region was probably painted during the artist’s study trip to Italy in 1857.
Squarcina grew up in Dalmatia and studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia under the auspices of an Austrian government scholarship. He became a popular portrait painter among the bourgeoisie and the clergy after completing his studies, but his true passion lay in large-scale historical works, such as his masterpiece “Galileo Galilei’s Abjuration before the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition” (now in the Archivio-Museo della Dalmazia, Scuola Dalmata dei SS. Giorgio e Trifone, Venice).
His works very rarely come on the market and are scattered throughout private collections and museums in Croatia and Italy.
