The present lot is widely regarded in the literature as Carl Ferdinand Sohn’s most beautiful portrait; however, the identity of the sitter remains unknown. Our mysterious lady belonged to the German aristocratic family von Monts de Mazin and is depicted wearing a Renaissance-like costume in front of an idealised landscape. Sohn’s masterful talent for reproducing materiality can be appreciated in the softness of her skin and the lustre of her fashionable hair.
After starting his career as a painter of historical works with medium success, Sohn quickly turned to portrait painting enjoying enormous popularity specially among women of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, travelling as far as Russia and the United States to fulfil his commissions.
