Lotto No. 546 -

Leopold Stoll

(Vienna 1803–1884)
An Opulent Still Life with Grapes, Melons, Apples, a Cockatoo, a Hare, a hamster and Goldfish, signed, dated Stoll 1838, oil on canvas, 94 x 73 cm, framed

Leopold Stoll grew up in Vienna, and became famous for his magnificent depictions of flowers. In the 1820s, his travels took him to Krakow and Warsaw. He then spent some time in St. Petersburg, where he studied botanical drawing intensively. His pictures were presented in the annual exhibition at St. Anna's as early as 1834, following his return to Vienna. His floral compositions were extremely creative; according to the Biographisches Lexikon des Kaiserthums Oesterreich, he created a painting with “flowers which, by means of the initial letters of their botanical designation, sensually represent the words ‘God save Franz the Emperor’”.
His works are almost exclusively still lifes of flowers and fruit. He often had special objects or animals appear in his flower paintings, for example a nymph from the park of Schönbrunn Palace or - as in the present lot - a cockatoo, a rabbit, a hamster, and two goldfish in a glass.
