Provenance:
Collection Henry de Triquet (1802-1874), Paris, Lugt 1304;
His attribution to Leonardo da Vinci;
Private collection, Austria

The present study goes back to the head of a "damned soul" in Michelangelo's fresco "The Last Judgement" in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The subject of the screaming man is influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's "Anghiari Battle" in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The present copy is related to drawings in the Uffizi (inv. 601E) and Windsor (inv. 1365) as well as to a copy in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no. 62) and may date to the late16th century on stylistic grounds as well as on the quality of the paper.
