After his initial training with the Brunswick portrait and decorative painter, engraver and lithographer Johann Hilarius Krevel, Johannes Heinrich Christian Eli, called Christel Eli, joined the color painting department of the Fürstenberg porcelain manufactory in Brunswick in 1817. There he received his formation from Anton Carl Rammelsberg. He completed his apprenticeship in a very short time. After closing the color painting department of the porcelain manufacture in Brunswick in 1828 he dabbled in a “painters’ compagnie”. From 1830 onwards until his death he was an independent artist. In 1857 he was awarded the title “court flower, fruit and insect painter”. Watercolors, gouaches and oil paintings from his hand are kept in the Municipal Museum Brunswick, in the Herzog-Anton-Ulrich Museum and in the Museum in Fürstenberg palace.
