František Kaván

From 1890 to 1895 František Kaván studied landscape at the Academy of Prague with Julius Marak. In 1892 an exhibition in Prague with works of Antonin Chitussi who had died a year before, impressed the young artist very much. When he turned to Symbolism, he was criticized by his teacher which made him leave the Academy. Around 1900 he received a gold medal for his “cloud paintings” at the Paris world exhibition. Thereafter he returned to pure landscape painting, to which he remained faithful until his death. He is best known for his winter paintings.
