Jan Langhans was trained in food industry but his real interest lay in photography. In 1876 he opened his first studio Jindřichův Hradec. In 1880 he moved to Prague where he opened a portrait studio in Vodickova street 37. Soon this became one of the largest photographic enterprises in Bohemia. Politicians, citizens, artists and intellectuals had themselves portrayed by Langhans. He also created painted pictures on the basis of the photographs.
