An assembly of people has gathered in a village on the occasion of a May festival. The figures are depicted in groups, drinking or buying goods at market stands but also dancing around a maypole in the centre. There are houses on both sides, one building is clearly recognisable by the red flag as an inn. Jacques Beernaert is renowned in particular for his small-scale figural paintings but he also painted larger altarpieces for local churches like Notre-Dame in Bruges and Saint Peter in Ypres. He founded a drawing school together with Matthias de Visch in Bruges.
