From 1883 onwards Ludwig Hofmann studied at the Academy of Fine in Dresden. He continued at the Art Academy of Karlsruhe and was student of Ferdinand Keller. After a brief study sojourn in Munich he went to Paris on the recommendation of Volz. In Paris he attended the Académie Julian. There he received a decisive influence by works of Puvis de Chavannes and Paul-Albert Besnard. From 1890 Hofmann was active as a freelance artist in Berlin. He belonged to the "Gruppe der Elf" (the „group of eleven“ with Max Klinger, Max Liebermann, a.o.). During his Munich sojourn he was influnced by works of Hans von Marées. Between 1894 and 1900 Hofmann travelled extensively and spent the most time in Rome and in his villa near Fiesole. Throuhout his life he dedicated himself to the reception of ancient art. His work was mostly inspired by an imagination of ancient Arcadia.
