Pieter Mulier

Pieter Mulier - Castle Schwallenbach - Collection Reinhold Hofstätter (1927- 2013)

(Haarlem ca. 1615-1670) two sailing ships on a stormy sea near a rock, oil on wood, 52 x 83 cm, framed (GS)

Provenance: auction Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, 9 September 1943, lot 927 (as Ludolf Bakhuizen)

The ascription history of this picture is complicated. It was offered for sale in 1943 in Lucerne as a work by Ludolf Bakhuizen. According to information held by RKD, The Hague, it is listed as by Simon de Vlieger, by Jan Theunisz. Blankerhoff, by Bonaventura Peeters and by Pieter Mulier. C. J. A. Wansink, formerly responsible for maritime paintings at RKD, thought at first of Pieter Mulier. His successor Laurens Schoemaker, whom we thank for his friendly assistance, followed Wansink’s train of thought and confirmed the work as by the hand of Pieter Mulier. He sees no similarity between it and the maritime works of de Vlieger, Bakhuizen and Blankerhoff. Bonaventura Peeters is closer but his paintings are on the whole more dramatic. Schoemaker writes: "On the basis of your photograph and the images in our documentation of comparable pieces, I think this is indeed a work by Pieter Mulier".
