Franz Xaver Petter was a son of the porcelain painter Jakob Petter (1758-1842). Unlike his father, he trained as an oil painter at the Vienna Academy where he was taught by Johann Baptist Drechsler and Sebastian Wegmayr.
In common with many of his contemporaries, Petter was hugely inspired by the 17th century Flemish masters who had excelled at floral renderings. This influence is visible in his early works in which flowers are often painted together with fruit or animals and the composition is still markedly similar to that of his predecessors. This changed in the 1850s with the emergence of a new and popular style of flower painting in which flora was depicted outdoors, where it grew, usually on the forest floor (so called Waldbodenbilder). With its freshly picked grapes still in the vineyard, the vine and the delicate vegetation on the left, the present work is a beautiful example of this new style of flower painting.
