Carl Ludwig Jessen

Carl Ludwig Jessen - Obrazy 19. století

(Deezbüll 1833–1917 Tondern)
Frisian Kitchen Interior, signed, dated C. L. Jessen Deetzbüll 1915, oil on canvas, 75 x 123 cm, framed, (Rei)

Carl Ludwig Jessen was a Frisian artist and is still known to this day as the “Frisian painter”. His significance lies in his depictions of the North Frisian rural way of life. After training to be a cabinet maker, Jessen worked as a house painter in the farms on the marshlands of North Friesia. Between 1848 and 1854 he taught himself to paint portraits. In 1853 he gave up cabinet making and devoted himself entirely to painting. From 1856 to 1865 he studied at the Copenhagen Academy under V.N.Marstrand. He travelled to Paris and Italy on a scholarship. He lived in Klockries from 1869 to 1870 and in Hamburg from 1871 to 1875, before returning to Deezbüll. It was only here that developed his specialism as a painter of contemporary Frisian rural life, little valued at that time. His works are distinguished by their faithful realism and muted palette. Kitchens – Kööken – played a significant role in the life of a Frisian household; it is here that the inhabitants cooked and worked. The present work shows the open hearth with its oven. Peat, cut from the moorland, was used as fuel and stored in the large blue box on the floor. The small blue box on the stove is the salt-cellar. The tin plates date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Eighteenth century blue Dutch plates are discernible on the wall, as well as colourful Dutch plates and a spoon-rack. On the wall to the left hangs a traditional plate-rack. The tankard on the windowsill is a German beer stein. Above the table, running from the top of the wall up to the beams, is the so-called Kat-Schurr, wooden panels attached directly below the low thatched roof.
