Schloß Matzen was first recorded in 1278, it was founded by the Bavarian ducal ministerialis of Freundsberg. The owners (who include the Fuggers) and appearance of the castle have altered over the course of the centuries. Matzen castle is one of Tyrol’s most famous sites and was rebuilt as a palace after 1873. Today it is a hotel.
