Reiner Dahlen first trained as a saddler before he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy. From 1858 he was a pupil of Joseph Wintergerst and Andreas Müller; he pursued his education as a self-taught artist. Dahlen travelled to North America, England and Paris. From 1862 to his death he was member of the Düsseldorf artist association (Düsseldorfer Künstler-Vereins). Aside from landscapes and figure scenes he often painted animals, especially horses. He is considered the first Naturalist of the Düsseldorf School of painting.
