Christian Ludwig Bokelmann began his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1868. After completing his studies in 1871 he became a pupil of Wilhelm Sohn. He received an award for his work In the House of Mourning at the Vienna world exhibition in 1873. Bokelmann’s portrayals of everyday life and its cares in the Gründerzeit period take their subject matter from amongst both the working and middle classes. In reproducing his detailed and natural scenes he avoids sentimental pathos, but without losing their narrative power. Modern tendencies appear in Bokelmann’s later creative period, as indicated by the pastose application of colour and the concentration on the effects of light and shade. Bokelmann’s paintings are held by numerous German museums.
