Friedrich Heinrich Füger

(1751-1818) Circle of, "Venturia pleas Coriolan to withdraw his troops from the city”, A variant after the painting by Heinrich Friedrich Füger, grisaille watercolour on paper, 98 x 128 cm, framed, (Sch) The present large drawing is a variant or partial copy after the painting "Venturia pleas Coriolan to withdraw his troops from the city” by Heinrich Füger (Keil, WV 512, Abb. 82). The drawing is of almost the same size as the painting, however it differs in some details from Füger’s version. While the figure groups in the painting’s and drawing’s foregrounds are almost identical, the background varies by the insertion of a sculpture of Romulus and Remus instead of the pedestal with the amphora in the painting. A seated figure appears instead of the stool at the right margin and the view of the town in the left background is omitted. The Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar (Inv.-Nr. KK 11218) house a drawing by Füger for this scene. In this drawing bearded Coriolanus is depicted in a thoughtful pose, touched by his wife and his son, while his mother is represented with a martial defensive gesture. Füger changed this original concept, however, and gave Coriolanus a more juvenile physiognomy and rather depicted him in confrontation with his mother. (see exhibition catalogue Weimar 1997, Cat.-No.92, Fig. p.225. Literature: Robert Keil, Heinrich Friedrich Füger 1751-1818. Nur wenigen ist es vergönnt das Licht der Wahrheit zu sehen, Vienna 2009, WV 512, p. 366, Fig.82; Im Blickfeld der Goethezeit I, Aquarelle and Zeichnungen aus dem Bestand der Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar, Weimar 1997, Cat.-No.92. We are grateful to Dr. Keil for the information on the present drawing.
