Carl Spitzweg

(Munich 1808–1885) Street in Cairo, oil on canvas, 41.2 x 32.5 cm, framed, (Rei)

Provenance: Private Swiss property Letter of authentication Professor Siegfried Wichmann, dated July 2004, available. … Probably inspired by the original by Georges Prosper Marilhat (La mosquèe d’Hasan et le bazaro au Caire) , Spitzweg developed the theme further (...) . In continuing the oriental theme Spitzweg used a wide variety of painting styles which are dramatic in the breadth of their composition and colours, in contrast to the abiding tranquility of the oriental bazaar .(...) Spitzweg took up this theme and reproduced it using the finest of nuances. To the left the interior with the figures, right the dignitaries in front of the mosque, and above the magnificent architecture in a huge variety of colour groupings. (..) As if themselves illuminating, each feature stands out from the darkness, whilst retaining the precise and formal contours of the drawing. The light natural lighting is in contrast to the dark shadows. It is a reminiscent of illuminating light - one of the most important paintings that Carl Spitzweg copied.
