Martinus Nellius

Martinus Nellius - Obrazy starých mistr?

(first mentioned in Leyden c. 1674, active in The Hague in 1676–80, died after 1706)
Still Life of Fruit in a Faience Bowl and Wine Glasses,
signed and dated at lower right: N Lius 1695 (?),
oil on canvas, 52 x 44 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Northern European collection (for more than 25 years).

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution.

In the encyclopaedia Holländische Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert (Lingen 1995) a characteristic still life by Martinus Nellius is described as usually a small-sized assembly of unspectacular objects: a few pieces of fruit arranged on a tablecloth together with a wine glass, seldom lacking a fly or butterfly, such as the present painting. However, with these paintings full of atmosphere, the painter’s style was diametrically opposed to those cool and even standoffish works created by his Leyden contemporaries. By means of light, shade, and colour, the artist succeeded in evoking moods and suggesting preciousness without depicting precious objects.
