Anthonie van Montfoort, called Van Blocklandt

The Adoration of the Shepherds,
oil on canvas, 172 x 134 cm, framed
The present painting is closely related to similar compositions by Blocklandt in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest and in the art collection of Göttingen University. An almost identical version of smaller dimensions was sold at Christie’s, New York, on 19 April 2007 as lot 217. Over a period of several years, Blocklandt was a student of Frans Floris in Antwerp. In 1572, he travelled to Rome, where he familiarised himself with the art of his Roman contemporaries and particularly with the work of Parmigianino. In addition to religious scenes, we also know of mythological subjects by Blocklandt’s hand.
