In 1586, Gillis van Valckenborch, the son of Marten and the brother of Frederik van Valckenborch, left Antwerp for Frankfurt am Main. Between 1590 and 1595 he sojourned in Rome. Until 1602 he closely collaborated with his brother Frederik. Gillis van Valckenborch painted landscapes populated by biblical and mythological figures, as well as protagonists from Greek and Roman history. His figures, rendered in a Mannerist style, usually appear amidst large, moving crowds. For his painting, the artist drew inspiration from revolutionary works by the School of Prague and the prevalent movement of international Mannerism. A characteristic feature of Gillis van Valckenborch’s art is the lively colouring of his compositions, for which he primarily used pink and light blue hues.
