Jan Frans Beschey

(Antwerp 1717–1786)
Landscape with travellers,
signed lower centre: J. F. Bescheij,
oil on panel, 58.5 x 78.5 cm, framed

Jan Frans Beschey was the youngest member of the important Antwerp artist dynasty, which assured like no other the continuance into the 18th century of the Antwerp traditions of the Golden Age. Whereas his brothers, Balthasar and Jacob Andries, were primarily famous for their use of religious and sometimes mythological motifs drawn from the Rubens School, Jan Frans, who rose to become dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1767, produced charming landscapes in the Flemish tradition. They were particularly popular in Great Britain. Beschey was also a successful art dealer.
