Provenance:
according to a label verso, formerly in the ownership of the Szépmüvészeti Museum, Budapest.
Drs Luuk Pijl, whom we thank for his kind help in cataloguing this picture, was able to confirm that it is an authentic work by Pieter Gysels on examination of a photograph. He compares the painting to a signed ‘Landscape with windmill’ (Christie’s auction, London, 7.7.2006, lot 157) and with another signed ‘Landscape’ (Sotheby’s auction, London, 7.7.2004, lot 2). Drs Pijl places the picture in the 1660s or 70s, that is, in the period when Gysels began to move away from the influence of the work of Jan Brueghels I.
