Giovanni Battista Salvi, called Il Sassoferrato

(Sassoferrato 1606–1685 Rome) workshop of ; Madonna with the Christ Child, oil on canvas, 50 x 42.1 cm, in an original carved gilded frame of the 17th century,

Sassoferrato's fame in the 17th and 18th centuries was based almost exclusively on his Madonna paintings. As in this painting it is above all the simplicity of composition and coloration, as well as the complete forgoing of a background design or of architectural scenery which impresses the viewer even today. Even during his lifetime, Sassoferrato's Madonnas were among the most popular of their kind. The increase in the veneration of the Madonna due to the Counter-Reformation unleashed a high demand for such small, private devotional images. Sassoferrato was able to cleverly benefit from his success, repeating this type very frequently when in the years after 1648, he settled in the Roman district of San Salvatore ai Monti. His very large workshop repeated his Madonna pictures until well into the 18th century.
