We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan who confirmed the present painting as an autograph work by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, the so-called ‘Goethe-Tischbein’ (written communication, June 2018, which accompanies this lot).
Börsch-Supan writes: ‘The painting, which according to my knowledge is not mentioned in literature, is of impressive quality, with lively movement and expression, graceful and tender in the treatment of complexions.’ He compares the present composition to Tischbein’s pendants from 1786 and 1790 representing Paris and Menelaus (Collection of the Princes of Waldeck and Pyrmont, Arolsen). Börsch-Supan again: ‘The motif fits the period in question (1790), when Tischbein began immersing himself in the edition of the volume of engravings in the context of the collection of vases of Sir William Hamilton and the series of etchings entitled “Homer Drawn after Antiques”.’
