LORELEY is an almost vertical slate rock that rises to a height of 132m on the right bank of the Rhine upriver from Sankt Goarshausen. LORELEY was created by C. Brentano under the impression of a journey on the Rhine: a fantastic figure of a beautiful girl that attracts men and delivers them to misfortune (Ballade von der Loré Lay in his novel ‘Godwi’ 1801). In order to escape her curse, the man jumped off a rock into the Rhine. The best-known version is a poem written by H. Heine in 1824, set to music by F. Silcher. Lit.:
