Georg Baselitz for the Vienna Opera Ball

This year, the 65th Vienna Opera Ball will focus on solidarity and will collect donations in various ways to benefit the campaign "Österreich hilft Österreich" (Austria helps Austria). The Vienna State Opera has asked the exceptional German-Austrian artist Georg Baselitz to create a work for the Opera Ball poster, which is now being offered for auction at Dorotheum. The proceeds of the auction will go to the initiative "Österreich hilft Österreich" (Austria helps Austria), an initiative supported by ORF and the leading aid institutions Caritas, Diakonie, Hilfswerk Österreich, Österreichisches Rotes Kreuz, Samariterbund and Volkshilfe, which supports aid for people in need in Austria.

No fees or surcharges will be added to the auction.

THE WORK: WIENMUSIK

The work "Wienmusik," created especially for the Vienna Opera Ball 2023, with its collaged leg stencils on an iconic golden ground, is a characteristic reference to one of the artist's self-images, just as it is open to a variety of associations:

Among Georg Baselitz's most important and earliest leitmotifs is the foot or leg. As early as the beginning of the 1960s, while painting Die große Nacht im Eimer (The Big Night in the Bucket), Baselitz conceived a series of paintings, all of which depict deformed feet: P. D. Füße (1960-63).  At the time, Baselitz was referring to Théodore Géricault's study of feet and hands from the first half of the 19th century. Edvard Munch's feet in the series Ekely and Spaziergang ohne Stock (2004/5), the boots of the Karl May cowboys created in the early 2000s, and the high heels of the monumental wood and bronze sculptures from more recent times also attest to Baselitz's fascination with this motif. Dancing feet and legs can also be found again and again in Baselitz's work: for example, in his 2015 series Ma grigio - here a reference to Frida Kahlo - and in his 2009 work Ceci n'est pas un tango, which refers to Andy Warhol's Dance Diagrams.

Georg Baselitz:

"I cultivated the method of working on the floor a lot. Later I made a philosophy out of it, which says that my contact does not go up to heaven. In Christian Europe, that's the only contact. The downward - to hell - is what people are afraid of. My contact goes down. I am a northern Alpine person, not to say a Germanic."

"Our time began around the turn of the 19th century in Europe in Vienna. Everything that was and is important for music and art came and comes from Vienna. Nothing of what was has been forgotten and perished, especially tradition - for example, you can see that at the Opera Ball. To dance, you need legs. I'm not a dancer, but how they need to move, I already know."

The auction is conducted by Dorotheum on behalf and for the account (agency) of Caritas Austria, which acts as a fiduciary for the administration of donations for aid campaigns by Österreich hilft Österreich. This creates a direct contractual relationship between Caritas Austria (as fiduciary representative) and the buyer.

Die mit der Einnahme der Spende beauftragte Caritas Österreich ist eine spendenbegünstigte Organisation (Reg. Nr. SO 1126 ) Bei Kauf eines Werkes bei dieser Auktion besteht die Möglichkeit, den Teil des Kaufpreises als Spende beim Finanzamt geltend zu machen. Für Privatpersonen wird die entsprechende Spendenmeldung beim Finanzamt – mit den gesetzlichen Neuerungen 2017 – von der spendenbegünstigten Organisation vorgenommen.
