Jacopo Robusti called il Tintoretto - Buy or sell works

Venice 1518/19-1594

Jacopo Robusti was born in Venice in 1518. He was the son of a silk dyer, from whose trade the painter derived his nickname of “Tintoretto” or “little dyer”. There are few reliable details about the artist's youth, where he trained, or which master he was apprenticed to. He established a large workshop in Venice which would follow the work of Titian, building on the legacy of the great master, and bringing to it a new imaginative, dramatic quality, which was achieved through his draughtsmanship and innovative painting skills.

Tintoretto’s unique painting technique involved rapid, loose brushstrokes and using strong contrasts between light and darkness. He was a master of storytelling, employing the figures in his paintings to convey the narrative through glances, posture and dramatic gesture. Tintoretto was a prolific painter and by the end of his career there was barely a Venetian church or palazzo which did not contain a painting by the virtuoso artist. His popularity endures to this day.
