Josef Hoffmann is among the most famous architects and designers of the Art Nouveau period. He joined with Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser, Josef Maria Olbrich and others to establish the Vienna Secession in 1897. Six years later, he again collaborated with Koloman Moser and an industrialist to found the Vienna Workshops.
Josef Hoffmann attended the State Crafts School in Brünn. He enrolled at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1892, where he studied under the architects Carl von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner an. Hoffmann was appointed Austrian secretary general for the Venice Biennale and member of the Austrian Senate for Culture in 1945. He was awarded the Grand Austrian State Prize for Architecture in 1950. Cultural institutions around the world have continued to dedicate exhibitions to Hoffmann’s work since his death in 1956.
Works by Josef Hoffmann are a regular part of the Art Nouveau auctions at Dorotheum. On May 12, 2015, for example, a 168-piece cutlery set fetched the outstanding price of €344,600.
